Excellence scholar athlete wearing pink accessories for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2025

Pink October

In a vibrant display of unity and compassion, scholars and student-athletes at Excellence Community Schools participated in Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October with pink socks and accessories. A designated Spirit Day took place mid-October to honor those who are battling and have lost their lives to breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, now in its 40th year, serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection, education, and support. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the American Cancer Society, approximately 316,950 women and 2,800 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2025. Additionally, about 42,170 women are expected to lose their lives to the disease this year. With 1 in 8 women facing a lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, awareness and proactive health measures are more critical than ever.

The school’s participation aligns with national efforts to turn awareness into action. The American Cancer Society reports that breast cancer mortality has dropped by over 40% since the inception of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985, largely due to improved screening and treatment options. Still, disparities persist, with Black women facing a 38% higher risk of dying from breast cancer compared to white women, despite a lower incidence rate.

Excellence Community Schools remains committed to educating and empowering students to become advocates for health equity, community engagement, and meaningful change. As October comes to a close and the pink accessories are tucked away, the impact of this awareness campaign endures—reminding us that the spirit of compassion and advocacy should carry on long after the month ends.
