INTERNET SAFETY AND COPPA
The Bronx Charter School for Excellence, Stamford Charter School for Excellence, and Public Prep use several software applications and web-based services which are provided by third-party vendors and hosted in the cloud. These applications and services offer many educational advantages including flexibility for teachers to select the best resources to complement their curriculum, a wide range of internet-based solutions and tools that can be quickly accessed anytime and anywhere, and increased opportunities for sharing, collaboration, and interactive learning.
In accordance with federal regulations included in the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), parental approval is required for the Bronx Charter School for Excellence (BCSE), the Stamford Charter School for Excellence (SCSE), and Public Prep to continue to provide your child with the most effective web-based tools and applications for learning.
For our students to use these programs and services, certain personally identifying information, including the student’s name and ID number must be provided to the website operator. Students will be able to maintain individual and personalized online access and files by providing this information to these operators. Importantly, BCSE, SCSE and Public Prep only choose to partner with service providers that do not share personal identifying information. Under federal law, these websites must provide parental notification and obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. The law permits schools such as BCSE, SCSE, and Public Prep to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of all of its students, thereby eliminating the need for individual parental consent given directly to the website or software operator.
BCSE, SCSE and Public Prep remain committed to protecting the privacy of our students and have established practices to do so. We will exercise caution in choosing third party services and will rigorously review each vendor’s privacy policy. BCSE, SCSE, and Public Prep do not collect more information from the students than is necessary to permit them to successfully access and use the online content. BCSE, SCSE, and Public Prep will continue to address internet safety and privacy rights with students during the year. Furthermore, BCSE and SCSE will provide information to parents about internet safety and privacy rights. We also encourage parents to educate their children about internet safety and privacy.
