Steps For Those Interested In Middle School Sports
Attend the Sports Interest Meeting
A few weeks before each season, an interest meeting will be conducted for each sport. At this time, the coach of the sport will distribute important information that is pertinent to participating in that sport. Note: Meetings for fall sports are held during the spring

Scholar/Athlete Eligibility Requirements For Middle School Sport Teams
To participate in ECS interscholastic sports and afterschool clinics, scholar/athletes must meet the following criteria:
Parent Consent
A signed Parent Consent Form must be submitted to the coach prior to tryouts. No student can participate without this documentation.
Medical Clearance
- Students must be enrolled in Excellence Community Schools, grades K–8.
- A current physical examination must be completed before each season by a licensed healthcare provider.
- An Interval Health History Form (valid for one school year) must be filed with the school.
- Students with medical conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies) must submit a condition-specific Health History Form, Medication Authorization, and provide all prescribed medications for practices and games.
- Compliance with the General Medication Administration Protocol is mandatory. Students will not be cleared to participate if required medications are unavailable.
Academic and Attendance Standards
- Students must submit a Scholar/Athlete Academic Eligibility Form signed by all teachers and a designated administrator.
- A minimum overall average of 80% to 90% attendance is required.
- Coaches will monitor academic performance weekly and maintain communication with teachers and parents.
Age and Grade Eligibility

After-school Clinics: Open to all ECS students without age or grade restrictions.

CSAA Interscholastic Sports:

Eligible up to 8th grade and 14 years old.

Teams may include two (2) 15-year-olds per roster.

Students who turn 16 during the calendar year are ineligible for CSAA participation.
Reasons for Ineligibility
Failure to meet eligibility requirements will result in:
- Medical Non-Compliance: Immediate disqualification until documentation and medications are provided.
- Academic/Attendance Deficiency: Placement on probation, suspension from activities, and possible removal from the team if no improvement is shown.
- Missing Consent Forms: Ineligibility to try out and participate.
- Age Violations: Disqualification from CSAA sports; participation limited to non-competitive clinics if applicable.
Middle School Sport Participation Standards
In accordance with New York State Education Department (NYSED) guidelines, students must complete a minimum of 10 practice sessions for each sport before participating in any interscholastic competitions or scrimmages.
Additional Participation Requirements:
- Students must be present in school on the day of the game or the day prior to being eligible to play.
- All attendance and participation requirements must be verified by the coach and school’s administration.
